UNIVERITY LODGE OF GUYANA No 9331

The University Lodge of Guyana, No. 13 in the District of Guyana, was sponsored by Eureka Lodge No. 8515, and consecrated by R W Bro. P A Taylor, District Grand Master on Wednesday October 4, 1989. The first Master was W. Bro. Edward Garnett Hopkinson, PDSGW, DC of Eureka Lodge.

Intended for suitable members of the staff, graduates and students of the University of Guyana, the lodge came into being after a series of meetings with the administration of the University of Guyana, with regard to an appropriate name which would not conflict with the laws governing the University. Meetings which are held at Masonic Hall, Carmichael Street, Georgetown, originally six times a year, were increased to seven – on the 4th Tuesdays of the months of January, February, March, May, June, September and December.

The Lodge held its first initiation on Saturday December 2, 1989 when Mr. Edward Garnett Hopkinson, a medical student at the University (a Lewis – being the first son of tW. Bro. E G Hopkinson) and Mr. Lennox Julian Hernandez, a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Technology, were initiated. At that meeting the lodge admitted its first joining member, Bro. Claude Eric Housty, a graduate of the University and Junior Deacon of Lodge Harmony No. 1110 SC. On Tuesday February 25, 1992, the lodge’s newly acquired regalia were consecrated and the principal officers formally attired.

The banner which was consecrated on May 25, 1998, was designed off the invitation to the consecration of the Lodge. The invitation featured a gold background with green borders, leaves, scroll and tassels, gold and green being the major colours of the University of Guyana flag. The Masonic symbols include the pillars of Solomon’s Temple crowned with the Celestial and Terrestrial Globes, while the non-masonic symbols, two intersecting silver rectangles topped by an Amerindian motif, represent the aluminum arch at the entrance to the University of Guyana, further demonstrating the lodge’s ties to the University. The Lodge recognises the early efforts of the late W. Bro. Randolph I Anthony, PDSGW, of Kara-Kara Lodge, in the design of the banner, and the efforts of W. Bro. G N Cave and W. Bro. L J Hernandez in the execution of the works.

With a commitment to furthering Masonic links and knowledge, the lodge in 1997 established ties with the University Lodge of the West Indies, and became a member of the Quatuor Coronati Correspondence Circle of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076, of the U K, the premier lodge of Masonic research.
